Tell me a story

I was very lucky growing up to have two parents who loved reading and storytelling. My mother would spend ages reading stories to me – everything from basic baby books like The Hungry Caterpillar and My Cat through to the Dr Seuss and Enid Blyton stories, many of them so many times the books started falling apart.
Being a stay at home mom, she had the most time to spend with me, but my dad really helped my love of reading by writing me my own bedtime story books.
Every night when he got home from work he would write and draw one more page of the story, adding in my favourite characters from other books as well as ones from his own imagination.
If we’d been to visit the zoo or a museum, that would end up in the story. When he bought a new car, it would come into the story.
But the books served a double role – not only were they fun, but they kept introducing new words to help me learn to read.
I am determined to carry on this legacy and do the same for Sky when she arrives.
As well as still having my dad’s books plus lots of my other childhood favourites, I have already bought her a book of bedtime stories, a book of princess stories (because she’s going to be my little princess) and a really cool baby book about a knight, a princess and a horse called Sir Prance-a-lot.
I can’t wait for the day I can start reading stories for her, and creating her own unique books too.

Our prayers for the New Year

2014 will most probably the most exciting year we will ever have. They year we get our little Sky. As we decided to only have one child, this year will be IT!! Thinking about it makes my heart stop – literally… It’s so exciting but also so scary.

But as we go into the new year, our wishes for Sky is that she will always know how much she is loved. She’s not even part of our lives and we already love her. That she will know that we did everything we could to make her part of our lives. From going for police clearance to stating if we have flat feet! (Goodness knows why!) We pray that no matter what happened in the few months up to now she will feel part of our family immediately and that nothing that has happened this far will have a lasting effect on her. That her life will really start the moment she is placed in our arms.

And fun – we pray for fun. We can’t wait for the first birthday party, the first family shoot, the first ice cream, the first walk at the beach, the first of everything!

And joy. We can’t wait to see her joy seeing her first Christmas. Her first toys.

Got this for her the other day… Her first year in pics!!

And laughter. We pray that everyday will have more laughter than tears. More good than bad.

The first step. That we can share it with her. That we are part of all the firsts in her life.

Okay enough soppiness now!! I’m going to go buy her a  new years gift!! Ciao!!

Getting ready

It’s the little things we never thought of that is surprising us every day… And the new technology… I soooo need one of those electronic nappy disposer thingies. Luckily no breastpumps here! Whoohoo!! I’m trying to not buy the smaller things as my friends are all on a permanent state of readiness to through us a baby shower of note!! So I think I should start putting together a list of things I would “like” and they can then choose. Like our own baby-registry.

We got the cutest camping cot – a pink one of course. There was a pink one on display but they had no stock, only green and brown ones. L refused to take another color, only the best for his princess. So after searching they found us a pink one on display in another shop that’s in perfect condition.

I also needed a very good pram as I love walking (and need to exercise a lot)… So we got a runner’s pram. I just love the way it handles. I’m getting to be a pro on it, although Tribble thinks it’s his and wants to sleep in the basket the whole time!

Tribble takinga ride….

I will later show you the smaller things and duvets 🙂

Seriously I can’t stand it anymore… Because we don’t know what age she will be (we are expecting anything from new born to 2 years) we can’t buy things like clothes etc. It’s driving me bat crazy… We got her a cot and pram and some toys…. But we have to wait to buy anything else.. I just want to BUY!!!!

Oh and we got her some awesome books – all fairytales 🙂

The start of a journey

1017722_10151788239693554_1436494604_nThey day we decided we are going to adopt, was maybe the most important, exciting and scariest day of our lives. We knew it was going to be anything but easy. Not everybody in our lives will be happy. Especially since I’m from a very conservative Afrikaans family and we know that our baby will not be ‘white’… And although we are still waiting for her to arrive, we know that we will soon have her in our home and then our family will be complete.

We have done all the paper work and now we just wait. We were hoping that she will be home before Christmas, but we also know that these things takes time. We started with steps to adopt in May. So it will be close to a year before we actually have Sky. But we know that the moment we have her in our arms – the trouble, paperwork, fights and money would mean nothing in comparison to the joy we will experience.

This blog will follow our journey. We know how many of our friends and family can’t wait to meet her and are just as excited as what we are. So this will keep everybody updated….

But for now…. We wait……………….
